It can be heartbreaking to see families hit by the recession and the effects of economic turmoil. As things look better for some, many families continue to drown in financial crises. For one family, the threat of losing everything was right around the corner, until Phillips Charitable Organization stepped in and rescued them from economic and emotional despair.

A Los Angeles single mother, who prefers to remain anonymous, had been trying to keep her head above water. The bills began piling up when her son’s father stopped paying child support on a regular basis. Her budding law career halted because she was no longer able to pay the dues to the State Bar Association. She had been trying to take legal action to address her lack of child support, but time and money delayed any progress.

When things could not get any worse, the woman arrived home one day to see an eviction notice on her door. Now, not only was she facing dwindling funds to provide for her child, but she was at risk of losing her home. With nowhere to turn, the woman reached out to Charles Phillips and PCO and was provided with an emergency grant to pay her rent.

"Charles Phillips and Phillips Charitable assisted my family at a crucial time in our lives. They were kind, respectful and were able to help quickly. Their intervention came as a great help and relief and I cannot express enough gratitude to this wonderful organization. Thank you, Charles Phillips, from the bottom of our hearts."

Time is not on their side for many families who are struggling financially. This is why two major operating principles of PCO are to (1) evaluate and decide on grants quickly, normally within 48 hours, to help people with urgent challenges and (2) expend 100% of foundation funds on helping people in need and nothing on administrative overhead which is funded by the board itself. PCO was founded in New York City by four lifelong friends: Young Hugh, Eric Garvin, Karen Phillips, and Charles Phillips.
