Meeting up with friends for drinks and dinner has just become much easier - instead of endless phone calls to find out where everyone is, now you can use a text message.

Austin-based software development house Project ATX has just released “Dude”, a simple social networking app that uses text messaging. Text ‘dude’ to your friends and the app automatically responds with their location.

“We came up with the name after texting multiple friends ‘Dude, where are you?’”, says co-founder Chris Rundlof. “Then we thought it would be great if an app would send back our friends’ locations.”

“The whole app is opt-in based so friends can only see friends if they’ve been pre-approved,” explains lead developer James Beswick. “Once you build an approved list of friends, you just text the word ‘Dude’ and the app tells you where they are in about 20 seconds on a Google Map.”

Dude is the third app by the Austin-based company that has several more apps in the pipeline ready to launch in the coming months. “Our apps are all based around making social interactions real, in-person and spontaneous,” adds Rundlof.

Dude is available in the Android Market at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.atxcap.dude.
