The art project aims to open the city of Funchal to artistic and cultural events. Old doors such as those to shops and deteriorated areas have been painted and decorated in artistic fashion. The city is bringing their forgotten buildings back to life with various styles of art.

José Maria Montero came up with the idea to have artists paint the doors of abandoned shops and homes. Over 100 artists took to the challenge, most of whom were Madeirian. The instructions Jose gave the artists were very clear: pick what door you want and create whatever you want. Some artists used clay, metal, tiles and whatever other unique materials they could find. The result is a beautiful collection of art amongst an urban backdrop.

161 doors were brought back to life – the youngest artist being 9 and the oldest 65. The works of art include all forms of visual arts ranging from painting, sculpture, photography, video, music and writing.

The art has transformed the derelict streets into a bustling area with cafes and tourists. The pilot art project has been such a huge success for Portugal that it is going to be expanded to Portugal and other parts of Madeira.

Madeira features some of the most pioneering street art displays in the world.
