Just hours ago, Guatemala was rocked by a 7.4 magnitude earthquake. As the extent of the damage is evaluated, the first response of many within the impacted area is to do what they can to help. Los Angeles based charity, Children’s Hunger Fund (CHF), is mobilizing to provide supplies for those serving on the frontlines.

As seen in past disasters, poverty stricken communities, where infrastructure is underdeveloped, experience much of the devastation and suffering. CHF supplies local churches with training and the provisions they need to help impoverished children and families.

One of CHF’s ministry partners in Guatemala, Isaura Escobar, reported that most of the country was affected. She said San Marcos, Retalhuleu, Escuintla, Huehuetenango, and part of the West were worst hit. Thirty-nine people have been reported dead and many more are missing.

Escobar said that a national red alert has been declared in Guatemala, so all buildings have been evacuated and people are moving to safe areas. As night falls, many will face the darkness without food, clothing, or shelter.

CHF’s “Mercy Network” in Guatemala was ready to mobilize at a moment’s notice. CHF immediately released their local supply of Food Paks, twenty-pound boxes, to be given to victims of the quake. Plans are underway to make more food and other aid available for shipment in the coming days.

“We ask for your prayers not only for Guatemala, but also for El Salvador and Mexico, which have been also affected,” Escobar requested.

CHF has opened a disaster relief fund for Guatemala to help provide Food Paks for quake victims. They are asking for donations via their website: ChildrensHungerFund.org/donate.
