Ford reignited demand for its Explorer after the automaker introduced a powerful-yet-efficient 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine into its iconic SUV as part of a 2011-model-year redesign. That EcoBoost evolution will continue next summer when the recently revealed 2016 Ford Explorer goes on sale with an even more potent mix of performance and fuel economy coming from an all-new 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder.

When Explorer buyers opt for the current 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, they receive 240 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque while saving on gas money with a 28-mpg highway rating. The new 2.3-liter EcoBoost in the 2016 Explorer is expected to surpass its predecessor's output by at least 30 horsepower and 30 pound-feet of torque while making no sacrifices in gas mileage. Intelligent four-wheel drive with Terrain Management System and a tow package with an available EcoBoost four-cylinder will also enhance the Explorer’s capability for the first time.

"The original EcoBoost four-cylinder showed Explorer drivers that they could own an SUV with great fuel efficiency while still getting the go-anywhere performance that is expected from a utility vehicle, and the new 2.3-liter EcoBoost will take that concept to the next level," said Jeff Klein, general sales manager of Thomas Ford, a Ford dealership in Beverly, Mass. "Also, the 2016 Explorer's innovative technology will extend well beyond the engine bay with a wide range of new connectivity and convenience features."

To keep passengers' mobile devices fully operational, the 2016 Explorer will be outfitted with smart-charging USB outlets throughout the vehicle, while the all-new top-trim Explorer Platinum will be the first Ford model to boast a 500-watt Sony Audio System with Live Acoustics and Clear Phase technology. The SUV's urban maneuverability will also be boosted by available front and rear cameras with industry-first washers, enhanced active park assist with perpendicular park assist, semi-automatic parallel parking and park-out assist. When owners have their arms full with groceries, a hands-free liftgate will prove to be a useful addition.
