Dallas and surrounding areas have seen a steady stream of rainfall over the course of the last several days that has reached record breaking proportions. Reports say the rainfall has made the month of May in 2015 the wettest May in DFW history, surpassing a previous record set in 1982. A major drawback to so much rainfall; however, has been the dangers presented to a number of drivers and passengers out on the highways as well as in their homes.

“Flood waters submerged Texas highways and threatened more homes Friday when a squall line stalled over Dallas overnight Thursday, dropping record-setting rainfall and triggering a Flash Flood Emergency in North Texas… The most recent rain added to the damage inflicted by thunderstorms that have killed at least 20 people statewide, including one overnight in suburban Dallas, and left 13 missing.”

The heavy rainfall has flooded several areas in Dallas where major accidents have occurred as a result. One crash in particular made headlines after one person was killed and two others sustained injuries in a multi-vehicle crash that has been attributed to the flooding.

“Weather is believed to have been a factor in a crash that killed one person and injured two others Saturday evening, Rockwall police said…About 6:30 p.m., Rockwall police were dispatched to Interstate Highway 30 near Horizon Road, where a westbound 18-wheeler had crossed a concrete divider and gone into the highway’s eastbound lanes, police said. The driver, whose identity had not been released, was killed.”

A number of additional incidents have occurred leading to serious car wrecks throughout DFW. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration an estimated 23 percent of the more than 5 million vehicle crashes that occur across the nation are linked to adverse weather annually. Statistics further suggest that a majority of weather-related crashes occur during rainfall.
Says Witherite, “Many drivers simply don’t know how to respond to certain circumstances that arise when driving in inclement weather conditions like heavy rain.” The attorney suggests that drivers can reduce their risks of becoming involved in an accident with actions such as avoiding driving distractions like cell phone use, being cautious about their speed, and waiting until conditions are safer if their circumstances permit them to hold off on making their commute.
Transportation safety advocates are also cautioning Dallas drivers to be careful when out on the roads as the rain continues to fall across the metroplex.
