TURNERS FALLS, Mass. — Nov. 16, 2015 — Hallmark Institute of Photography will host an author reception for Trish Crapo, a 2008 Hallmark graduate, on Saturday, Dec. 12, from noon until 3 p.m. Crapo, of Leyden, Mass., will discuss and sign copies of her new book, Dune Shack, with images taken during a two-week artist’s residency on Cape Cod National Seashore. Her photographs from that period, and a second residency on the Cape, will hang in the school’s Alumni Gallery beginning in December.
“We are proud to showcase the work of talented graduates who are doing exceptional photography,” said Ed Martin, president of the photography school. “We invite the public to meet Trish and to enjoy her evocative vision of these historic artists’ retreats on the Cape.
Built between the 1880s and the 1920s, Cape Cod’s primitive shacks have hosted Jackson Pollack, Eugene O’Neill, Jack Kerouac and other noted artists and writers. In May 2013, Crapo spent two weeks at the Margo Gelb shack through the Outer Cape Artists in Residency Consortium, and Dune Shack is based on photographs taken during that period. This year, she spent a week at the Ray Wells shack through the Peaked Hill Trust Residency Program for the Arts and Sciences. Her show at Hallmark’s Alumni Gallery will include image from both residencies.
“I had it in mind to do something documentary that first time, to let others know what it would be like to live in a dune shack for two weeks. And a book made sense because I am also a writer,” said Crapo, who covers poetry and the visual arts as a freelancer for The Recorder (Greenfield, Mass.). During her residencies, she used several types of cameras to achieve different effects.
“Trish’s creative use of film and digital imaging technology demonstrates the technical skill that our program aims to provide,” Martin said.
Hallmark offers an intensive, 10-month residential program in professional photography and imaging arts designed to prepare students to open their own photographic business or to fill entry-level positions in the diverse and competitive photography and videography industry. The curriculum addresses both the art and business of photography. Students learn from resident faculty members who are professional photographers as well as from guest lecturers representing all corners of the imaging field.
Located in Hallmark’s Administration Building, the Alumni Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
