Green Mountain at Fox Run, a women’s health retreat since 1973 and pioneer of the non-diet approach to health and healthy weights, is announcing a one-time workshop featuring Carolyn Coker Ross, MD, MPH, an expert in eating disorders and integrative medicine. The workshop will be part of Green Mountain’s regular programming that helps women manage their weight through mindful, intuitive eating, physical activity, and understanding the emotions that lead them to overeat.

Long before binge eating was recognized by the psychiatric community as a legitimate disorder, Green Mountain at Fox Run worked with women who binge eat to help them achieve and maintain health. The one-week program featuring Dr. Ross is titled “Why Can’t I Stop Overeating? Mastering Binge, Emotional and Compulsive Eating,” and will cover topics such as:

• The profiles of binge, emotional and compulsive eating
• Nutritional considerations in binge eating and obesity
• The role of stress in binge, emotional and compulsive eating
• The relationship between sleep, hunger/satiety and body weight regulation
• Body image issues and how they can contribute to these overeating behaviors

The workshop is scheduled for January 8-14, soon after millions of women will start restrictive New Year’s diets and non-sustainable fitness regimens that can ignite binge, compulsive and emotional eating and ultimately result in more weight gain. An August 2011 study published in the Journal of Obesity suggests that those who undertake more episodes of “intentional weight loss” in their lifetimes are more susceptible to weight gain. The study concluded that dieting itself may induce a small subsequent weight gain, independent of genetic factors.

“Green Mountain at Fox Run pioneered the non-diet approach almost 40 years ago because we knew even then that restrictive dieting did nothing but lead to unhealthy behaviors, such as binge eating, compulsive eating and yo-yo dieting,” said Marsha Hudnall, MS, RD, owner of Green Mountain and vice president of programming and communications. “We’re pleased to host this program with Dr. Ross, who also prescribes a holistic approach to weight management and the non-diet approach.”

Dr. Ross owns a private practice in Denver that uses the best of Western and complementary and alternative medicine to treat a wide array of medical issues including eating disorders, obesity, addictions, depression and anxiety. She is the author of three books, including “The Binge Eating Disorder and Compulsive Overeating Workbook.”

“Both Green Mountain and I have worked extensively with women to improve their health by taking their focus away from the scale,” said Dr. Ross. “I look forward to expanding the Green Mountain experience by helping women understand the mind-body-spirit approach and the role it plays in healing from binge eating and compulsive overeating.”
