Chevy’s Corvette has evolved through six power-packed generations since first going on sale in 1953, and the automaker recently announced that the seventh version of the sports car is just around the corner. The 2014 Corvette will make its high-profile debut on the eve of the Detroit Auto Show in January, and as a preview, Chevrolet has unveiled the latest iteration of the vehicle’s trademark Crossed Flags logo.
Featuring more angular and raked lines, the Crossed Flags logo of the 2014 Chevy Corvette was designed to reflect the vehicle’s modern appearance, showing more attention to depth, color and detail. Though Chevy has yet to release photos or specs of the next-gen model, spy spots have indicated a tighter, more focused exterior design, and the new Corvette is expected to receive an upgraded interior with higher quality materials. The automaker says that just two parts, the cabin air filter and the rear latch for the removable roof panel, will carry over from the outgoing generation.
“While buyers should instantly recognize the new model as a Corvette, Chevy has upped its game across the board, from design and refinement to responsiveness and efficiency,” said Jeanette Downing, general manager of Goodwin Chevrolet Brunswick, a Maine Chevy dealer. “It's expected that the 2014 Corvette will be made with a lot of lightweight composite materials, which should mean both improved fuel economy and faster acceleration.”
Driving enthusiasts will likely have to wait until late next year to get behind the wheel of the new Corvette, but until then, the current 2013 model offers more than its share of satisfying performance. The base 2013 Chevy Corvette features a 6.2-liter V8 engine that pumps out 430 horsepower, yet it still returns up to 26 mpg on the highway. Meanwhile, the most dedicated power junkies can opt for the 638-horsepower 2013 Corvette ZR1, which sprints from zero to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds.
Another of Chevy’s performance models, the Camaro muscle car, made a special appearance last week at New York Comic Con. Guarded by Bumblebee from the “Transformers” movie franchise, a matching yellow and black Chevy Camaro SS, which is the vehicle Bumblebee transforms into in the films, attracted fans at the show. While the special Camaro likely appealed to the imaginations of many Comic Con attendees, Chevrolet also had models of its new 2013 Spark mini car on hand to appeal to their practical, tech-savvy side.
Four of the Chevy Sparks on display at New York Comic Con donned vinyl wraps, featuring characters from comic books like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and the “Star Wars”-inspired “Saga.” In the Artist Alley section of the show, comic artists painted on a flat-white Spark. During the weekend, Chevy offered ride-alongs in its affordable and vibrantly styled hatchback, which returns up to 38 mpg on the highway and provides up to 31.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the front seats.
“The Camaro may be the Chevy featured in ‘Transformers,’ but it’s the Spark that is really more than meets the eye in real life,” added Downing. “Everyone knows about the power of the Camaro, but the versatility and breadth of features in the Spark are very surprising considering the car’s small size.”
