Though it will just start arriving at U.S. dealerships this month, the all-new 2013 Range Rover has already earned its first major award. Named Top Gear magazine’s Luxury Car of the Year, the redesigned SUV impressed the publication’s discerning motoring journalists as well as the witty presenters of the popular BBC America TV show bearing the same name.

Top Gear declared the 2013 Range Rover the “stand-out machine in its category” and the “best of the best,” adding that it is equally suited for the daily commute as it is for trips across country, or countries. Compared to the previous generation, the magazine noted that the new Range Rover has redefined boundaries, pushed manufacturing technologies forward and upped the level of luxury.

"Land Rover has managed to preserve the Range Rover’s iconic exterior shape, but underneath, it is a completely new vehicle," said Dave Edwards, general manager of Land Rover Peabody, a Range Rover dealer in Massachusetts. "The change to lightweight yet strong materials has improved fuel efficiency and responsiveness, but without sacrificing the renowned capability or attention to luxury, resulting in the best Range Rover yet."

Featuring the world’s first all-aluminum unibody structure on an SUV, the 2013 Range Rover has dropped roughly 700 pounds compared to its predecessor, enhancing agility while reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Despite that weight loss, the interior has actually become more spacious, with an extra 4.7 inches of rear legroom. That extra cabin space is also complemented by a sleek new dashboard with minimalist controls like those found on the Range Rover Evoque.

When it comes to rugged travel, the latest Range Rover will benefit from the next-generation Terrain Response 2 Auto system, which can now automatically engage terrain modes for optimum traction and stability, whether it is on snow, ice, mud, rocks or sand. Owners will also feel a difference on their daily drives around town, as a redesigned Adaptive Dynamics four-corner air suspension provides a smoother ride, even if it is just on the way to the shopping mall.

The exterior design of the 2013 Range Rover has been updated with swept-back headlights and a sloping roofline, both styling cues taken from the Range Rover Evoque. The Range Rover’s compact sibling has been a popular item at dealerships since going on sale in October 2011, but last month it saw its best retail sales yet. Moving 904 units in November, sales of the Evoque rose 35 percent compared to the same month last year.

"Besides the fact that it has quickly become the brand’s second-best seller, the Evoque’s innovative styling has also made a significant impact on the look of the rest of the lineup," added Edwards. "We expect that its influence on the new Range Rover will also help drive a large boost in sales for the model in the coming months."
