Named the North American Truck of the Year and Motor Trend Truck of the Year for 2013, the redesigned 2013 Ram 1500 has proven it has what it takes to stand out in the competitive half-ton pickup segment, but now its buyers have a new way to set themselves apart from other Ram owners. Arriving at dealerships this month, the 2013 Ram Black Express takes the already intimidating presence of regular Ram 1500 models and adds even more aggression with an all-black exterior.

The 2013 Ram 1500 Black Express pulls off its stealth look with the help of a black front fascia with fog lamps, a black grille surround with black hex-link inserts, 20-inch black aluminum wheels and a black rear bumper. Even the Ram badges on the grille and tailgate are black, and the body-side badging has been completely removed. The blacked-out exterior takes on a more devious demeanor at night, thanks to the bi-functional halogen projector headlamps with black bezels and the use of several amber LEDs for turn signals and side markers. Buyers can chose between two- and four-wheel-drive models in regular-, quad- and crew-cab body styles.

"The new Black Express models give the Ram 1500 an even more aggressive look that suits its impressive capability perfectly," said Brian Duval, general manager of Concord, New Hampshire Ram dealership Bob Mariano Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram. "With a 395-horsepower 5.7-liter HEMI V8 complementing the dark styling, the truck's bite is just as big as its bark, and with its affordable price, we expect the Black Express to attract a lot of younger, first-time Ram buyers."

For the 2014 model year, Ram trucks will be receiving new options underneath the hood as well, including a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine for the Ram 1500 and a gas-powered 6.4-liter HEMI V8 unit for updated Ram Heavy Duty models. The first-ever diesel powerplant in the half-ton pickup truck segment, the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel is predicted by Ram to return better fuel economy than any gas-powered V6 in its class, yet it will still produce 240 horsepower and a massive 420 pound-feet of torque.

Buyers that need the utmost in capability may instead opt for the new 6.4-liter HEMI V8 in the 2014 Ram Heavy Duty, which will deliver 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque, surpassing all other gasoline engines in its class. Additionally, drivers will find an improved ride in the 2014 Ram 2500 during their daily commutes with either a new standard five-link coil rear suspension system or an available rear air suspension system.

"The suspensions of many other heavy-duty pickup trucks are tuned exclusively for handling larger payloads, but the ones in the new Ram trucks are designed to adjust when you're driving with an empty bed, so you get a much smoother ride overall," Duval added. "As much as Ram has improved its rugged performance in its new generation of trucks, the brand has paid just as much attention to making sure its customers are comfortable and connected in the cabin."
