In its first full month on the market, the redesigned 2014 Acura MDX helped overall sales of the luxury crossover SUV rise by 30 percent in July compared to the same period last year. A total of 5,551 MDX models found new homes in the United States last month, making the vehicle Acura's best-seller in July.
Equipped with a new 3.5-liter i-VTEC V6 engine, the 2014 Acura MDX produces 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. Those figures not only represent a 2 percent increase in horsepower per liter and an 8 percent boost in overall torque compared to the outgoing 3.7-liter V6, but they also come with a 17 percent improvement in EPA fuel economy when comparing all-wheel-drive models. Contributing to that greater fuel efficiency is a new advanced body structure that results in a weight loss of 275 pounds, allowing for quicker acceleration as well.
"For the 2014 model year, MDX buyers get a more responsive ride while paying less at the gas pump, so it's not surprising that the crossover's sales have seen an instant boost," said Joel Avery, general manager of Acura of Peabody, a Massachusetts Acura dealer. "Combine those factors with an interior that is more comfortable and convenient, and we could be seeing record MDX sales for several months to come."
Occupants of the 2014 Acura MDX benefit from a quieter cabin, thanks to the use of Active Noise Control technology and other noise-reduction measures, like thicker, three-layer acoustic glass for the front side windows and windshield. Meanwhile, rear passengers will welcome a new Extended Slide feature that enables the second-row seat to move forward or backward by six inches, providing limo-like legroom for second-row occupants when the third row is empty. Parents will also approve of the One-Touch Walk-In function, which will let their children access the third row with the press of a button.
Acura hopes the 2014 MDX will follow in the footsteps of its smaller crossover SUV, the Acura RDX, which has now achieved 15 straight monthly sales records following its redesign for the 2013 model year. Moving 3,936 units last month, the RDX saw its sales increase by 48 percent compared to July 2012. Year-to-date, sales of the luxury compact crossover are up 88 percent over the same period last year.
"The latest generations of the MDX and RDX have benefited from many of the same technologies, like their Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structures and the use of Active Noise Control in their cabins," added Avery. "With their mixes of performance, efficiency and comfort, there is no better one-two punch out there when it comes to luxury crossovers."
