Ford to Offer First CNG/LPG Burning Half-Ton Pickup

Ford's F-150 pickup truck is already the most popular model in its F-Series lineup, and the half-ton truck is expected get a sales boost this fall when it adds lower fuel costs to its resume. The American automaker will make a gaseous-fuel prep package available for the new 2014 Ford F-150, which makes it the only manufacturer with a half-ton truck that can run on compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

On average, CNG costs $2.11 per gasoline gallon equivalent in the United States, with prices sinking as low as $1 in certain regions. Unleaded fuel, on the other hand, averages $3.66 per gallon, meaning drivers of CNG-powered vehicles could achieve substantial savings over the lifetime of the vehicle. The F-150 is the first of eight commercial Ford vehicles slated to offer the gaseous-prep option within the next 12 months.

"Business owners and fleet operators are always looking for ways to reduce running costs, and Ford is making it easy for them to see benefits on the bottom line," said Russ Daniel, partner and general manager of Landers McLarty Ford, a Ford dealership in Arkansas. "CNG and LPG offer low-running costs and can help businesses avoid the price fluctuations gasoline experiences regularly."

Boosted by the continued popularity of the F-Series, which includes the F-150, Ford experienced an 11 percent year-over-year sales increase last month to reach its highest July sales total since 2006. The American automaker sold 60,449 F-Series units in July alone, marking a 23 percent year-over-year increase from the same time period a year ago.
