The Range Rover Evoque made a lasting impression in 2011 when it hit the market as Land Rover's nimblest and most fuel-efficient ride yet. For the 2014 model year, the luxury crossover SUV will elevate those attributes with a bevy of new technologies. At the forefront of the changes will be a new nine-speed automatic transmission that promises greatly increased responsiveness and reduced fuel consumption.
As one of the world's first nine-speed gearboxes on a passenger car, the ZF-9HP transmission in the 2014 Range Rover Evoque features a wide range of gear ratios and an adaptive shift program that quickly tailors transitions to different driving styles. Performance will be boosted even further by the now-standard Active Driveline system, which decouples four-wheel drive at steady speeds above 22 mph but also monitors vehicle status to instantly send power back to all four wheels if needed. The new system will also provide better traction and stability through an Active Torque Biasing feature, which distributes torque between the two rear wheels with an electronically controlled differential. Meanwhile, a Torque Vectoring feature counteracts understeer by redirecting torque among all four wheels.
"The Range Rover Evoque is already one of the most agile SUVs on the market, so we can't wait to join our customers and let the 2014 model loose on the road with its new transmission and Active Driveline system," said Dave Edwards, general manager of Land Rover Peabody, a Greater Boston Range Rover dealer. "The best part is that the Evoque's improvements in on-road performance will come along with even greater fuel efficiency and confidence-inspiring capability."
Above its upgraded underpinnings, the 2014 Range Rover Evoque will also offer higher levels of safety, convenience and style. Among the new driver-assistance technologies will be Adaptive Cruise Control, Closing Vehicle Sensing and Reverse Traffic Detection, which alerts drivers to oncoming vehicles. Additionally, the new Park Exit technology will allow the Evoque to automatically pull out of parallel parking spots, and a Perpendicular Park feature will center the vehicle in perpendicular parking spaces. Outside, new alloy wheel styles and a revised Land Rover badge on the grille, tailgate and wheel centers will augment the Evoque's award-winning design.
Land Rover hopes those extensive changes will bolster sales of the already-popular Evoque when the 2014 model goes on sale this fall. Last month, the compact crossover SUV moved 1,070 units to lead the Land Rover lineup in sales growth, rising 53 percent compared to August 2012. Those strong numbers helped the overall Land Rover brand reach record August sales for the month, with 4,938 models finding new homes in the United States.
"The 2014-model-year changes build upon the things that are already so great about the Evoque, so they should help the vehicle maintain its rapid sales momentum into next year," added Edwards. "The 2014 Evoque will still be well ahead of its segment with its modern styling, and it will also be taking a big leap forward with the three additional gears in its transmission."
