Motor Trend Lauds Porsche 911 Carrera 4S as Best Driver's Car

Some driving enthusiasts determine their ideal ride using numbers on a spec sheet, while others place a priority on how the vehicle feels on the road. To find the model most likely to please both camps, Motor Trend recently took 12 of the best-driving cars on the U.S. market and put them to the test on the road and track. For the second straight year, a Porsche 911 variant rose to the top of an elite group of vehicles, with the 911 Carrera 4S earning the title of Motor Trend Best Driver's Car for 2013.

The 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S faced off against a range of adversaries in this year's Best Driver's Car competition, from luxury rides like the Aston Martin Vanquish and Jaguar F-Type to performance-focused models from mainstream automakers like the Ford Focus ST and SRT Viper. In addition to being subjected to Motor Trend's usual series of performance tests and a hot lap at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, each car was evaluated during a 500-mile road trip that included a 4.3-mile hill climb and descent on a closed canyon highway.

"The Porsche 911 will always put up impressive numbers in regimented tests, but the car keeps winning these more holistic driving competitions because it has near-flawless handling in real-world driving conditions," said Larry Bedell, general manager of Porsche of Nashua, a Porsche dealer in New Hampshire. "While other sports cars might have more power or torque than their chassis and suspensions can handle, the Porsche 911's high output is perfectly complemented by precise engineering throughout the vehicle."

Featuring a rear-mounted 3.8-liter six-cylinder boxer engine, the 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S churns out 400 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque, allowing it to sprint from zero to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds with its new seven-speed manual transmission. Meanwhile, an advanced Porsche Traction Management all-wheel-drive system sends most of the car's power to the rear wheels for improved handling, yet it can instantly transfer more power to the front wheels when any loss in traction is detected.

Though the 911 Carrera 4S showcases the latest technology that Porsche has to offer, the luxury automaker is also improving the road manner of its past models. Working in partnership with Michelin, Porsche has developed new high-performance tires for the Carrera GT super sports car built between 2003 and 2006. Available now, the Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires improve stability when speed and lateral acceleration are pushed to the limit, thanks to the added grip and sharper steering provided by dual-compound rubber on the inside and outside of the treads. The new tires can also increase fuel efficiency by up to 10 percent on the road and up to 20 percent on the track compared to the previous tires.

"Porsche has done a great job of making its newer models lighter and more fuel efficient while still boosting performance, and the Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires apply some of that approach to the older Carrera GT," added Bedell.
