Veteran residential and plumbing-based product developer Doug Lenberg has launched Real Green Building Systems (RGBS), a consulting firm, that provides an energy and water conservation approach to homebuilding.

While researching an integrated Plumbing-Based Fire Suppression System (PBFSS) for residential developers and builders, New Mexico native Doug Lenberg discovered not only could he package a PBFSS that would protect homes from fire damage, but it also could serve as a baseline for a fully-integrated “green” system for residential building.

“After 30 years experience in the plumbing and building supply industries, I saw too many people lose everything on account of home fires.” said Lenberg “I wanted to find a simple low-cost method to protect homeowners, as well as firefighters, from fire danger. What began with packaging a plumbing-based fire suppression system has since led to a holistic approach that combines water conservation, energy conservation and renewable energy technologies, at a price that is affordable to builders and homebuyers.”

Working with KOZI Homes in Farmington, New Mexico, Lenberg built a “proof-of-concept” home in 2009. Today, there are 12 RGBS homes, costing an average of $99 per square foot to build.

“We plan to build our next home near or in Denver, Colorado,” said Lenberg. “Today we are happy to say that this is no longer a good idea; it is a reality that provides all parties significant cost reductions in a market where sustainable energy-efficient homes are no longer unattainable for the average homebuyer.”
