For the 2014 model year, BMW decided to differentiate the sporty two-door versions of its 3 Series from the sedan models by giving them their own nameplate: the BMW 4 Series. While the 2014 BMW 4 Series Coupe has already rolled out to dealers, the 2014 BMW 4 Series Convertible will make its public debut at the LA Auto Show next month before going on sale in the first quarter of 2014.

Sporting the same engines as its fixed-top sibling, the BMW 4 Series Convertible will feature a TwinPower Turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 240 horsepower in 428i models and a TwinPower Turbo 3.0-liter inline-six churning out 300 horsepower in 435i models. While EPA fuel-economy figures have yet to be announced, the BMW 4 Series Convertible is expected to be more efficient than the outgoing BMW 3 Series Convertible, thanks to new aerodynamic Air Breathers and Air Curtains, an Auto Start Stop function, a new eight-speed sport automatic transmission and the use of lightweight materials in the body.

"The new BMW 4 Series Convertible is designed to optimize your open-air fun without giving you a hangover at the gas pump later on," said Marshal Cabot, general manager of BMW of Peabody, a Greater Boston BMW dealer. "Massachusetts drivers can even opt for xDrive all-wheel drive on the 428i Convertible model to ensure they can take a joy ride in all four seasons."

When drivers are forced to keep the top up in colder or inclement weather, the BMW 4 Series Convertible boasts a redesigned three-piece retractable hardtop with a noise-reducing headliner, creating a more peaceful cabin. Should owners want to drive in the open air during cooler temps, however, there are newly available three-temperature neck warmers for the driver and front passenger. Regardless of the weather, the hardtop can be lowered in just 20 seconds at speeds of up to roughly 11 mph.

Beyond the standard BMW 4 Series Convertible models, buyers can upgrade to Sport Line, Luxury Line and M Sport trims. In the Sport Line, drivers benefit from high-gloss black accents on the exterior, a sport suspension on rear-wheel-drive models and an optional Coral Red interior. Buyers of Luxury Line models receive chrome accents inside and out, as well as stitched leather seats and the available 4 Series-exclusive Pearl Gloss Chrome metal inlay and Ash Grain anthracite wood trim. Meanwhile, the 4 Series Convertible M Sport dons performance-focused components like an M aerodynamic package, an M Sport suspension and available M Sport brakes, as well as aesthetic touches like 18- or 19-inch light-alloy wheels and an optional Estoril Blue Metallic paintjob.

"Every BMW 4 Series Convertible is designed to turn heads out on the road, but the variety of packages allows buyers to stand out a little more while tailoring their car's performance," added Cabot. "BMW is going to sell a lot of 4 Series Convertibles, but each new owner is going to feel like they are taking home a model that uniquely meets their desires."
