Redesigned Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet Models to Debut at LA Auto Show

Range-Topping Drop-Tops Are Faster, More Powerful and Fuel Efficient

There are few places more appropriate to premiere a speedy drop-top than in sunny Los Angeles, and that is just where the redesigned 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet and 911 Turbo S Cabriolet will make their public debuts next month. Bowing at the LA Auto Show on Nov. 20, the range-topping convertibles will be more powerful, faster and more fuel efficient than their predecessors.

Featuring the same engine as the new Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S coupes revealed a few months ago, the new Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet produces 520 horsepower with the twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter six-cylinder, while the same unit is tuned to churn out 560 horsepower in the Turbo S Cabriolet model. Porsche says those figures each add up to 30 more horsepower than the outgoing models, allowing the 911 Turbo Cabriolet and 911 Turbo S Cabriolet to go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds and 3.1 seconds, respectively. Despite that impressive performance, both redesigned models are rated to return up to 24 mpg on the highway.

"The new Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet will deliver an unparalleled open-air driving experience without making its drivers stop at the gas station every time they're out on a Sunday drive," said Larry Bedell, general manager of Porsche of Nashua, a Porsche dealer in New Hampshire. "Even with the incredible straight-line acceleration, owners will probably have even more fun in the turns, thanks to a new active rear-axle steering system that makes the 911's signature handling even more precise."

To help emulate the performance of its fixed-top brethren, the new Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet sports a retractable roof with an aerodynamic, coupe-like arch made possible by the use of lightweight magnesium in the frame. Like on the previous-generation 911 Turbo Cabriolet, the advanced fabric top can be opened or closed in about 13 seconds at speeds of up to 30 mph.

Porsche hopes the dealership arrival of the new Turbo Cabriolet early next year will further boost already surging sales of the 911. Last month, sales of the Porsche 911 totaled 609 units in the United States, a 20 percent increase compared to September 2012. Through three quarters of 2013, Porsche dealers have moved 7,498 units of the 911, 13 percent more than the same period last year.

"Porsche continues to roll out variants of the 911 following the car's redesign for the 2012 model year, and each new release is fueling sales," added Bedell. "This year is the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911, and the iconic sports car remains as popular as ever because it keeps advancing performance while meeting modern demands for fuel efficiency and connectivity."
