With BMW's coupe models getting a bigger share of the spotlight in the German luxury automaker's lineup, the all-new 2014 BMW 2 Series is being prepped for its public debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January. As part of a broader model differentiation strategy, all sporty coupes from BMW are receiving a dedicated even-numbered series, and the BMW 2 Series Coupe will offer a higher performance entry-level option by replacing the BMW 1 Series Coupe. The sub-compact two-door models feature a completely new design, improved driving dynamics and a pair of powerful-yet-efficient engines.

Though it will be the smallest BMW coupe on the market, the 2 Series will pack in plenty of performance. A new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine generating 240 horsepower will be the base powertrain in the BMW 228i model, while a 3.0-liter six-cylinder option in the BMW M235i Coupe will unleash 322 horsepower, the highest of any gas-powered BMW M Performance model. The new series will also feature better fuel efficiency thanks to optimized aerodynamics, the application of Brake Energy Regeneration and a standard eight-speed automatic transmission.

"One of the main advantages of having a separate designation for BMW coupe models is that the marque can focus specifically on sports-car design and development," said Melanie Sterry, general manager of Russel BMW, a Baltimore BMW dealer. "When the 2 Series arrives early next year, it will draw a lot of attention from sports-car enthusiasts who want a compact and agile rear-wheel-drive coupe that delivers a highly engaging driving experience."

BMW is seeking to differentiate the design of its latest even-numbered series with a low profile and distinctive swooping lines that grant the 2 Series a muscular stance. A long bonnet and frameless windows add to the uniquely sporty look of the BMW 2 Series Coupe. Meanwhile, the interior design echoes that performance-focused theme, with a center console tilted toward the driver and high-quality materials like matte Satin Silver trim throughout the cabin.

Despite its previous slot as a 1 Series Coupe, the BMW 2 Series is instead being compared to the BMW 2002, with the automaker citing the classic coupe's fun-to-drive factor. The BMW 02 range was introduced 45 years ago to cater to drivers who wanted a smaller two-door model that could provide the responsiveness of more expensive sports cars. The aim of the new BMW 2 Series Coupe is to bring back the same spirit in a more modern package.

"Drivers of the 2 Series will be able to enjoy excellent performance while accessing a full suite of BMW's advanced technology, from the standard BMW iDrive system and dual-zone automatic climate control to an available 8.8-inch control display," added Sterry. "The car's technology is also geared toward improving safety, with the options of a rearview camera and cruise control with automatic braking."
