Subaru Secures Record Annual Sales with Two Months Left in 2013

Redesigned Forester SUV Continues to Drive Automaker's Growth

While most automakers must wait until the end of the year to potentially announce their best-ever annual sales, Subaru had the luxury of releasing its good news with two months remaining in 2013. With a 32 percent year-over-year sales increase in October, the automaker has already surpassed its previous annual record from 2012, reaching 347,890 units sold in the United States year-to-date.

Following its arrival at dealerships in March, the redesigned 2014 Subaru Forester continues to be a major driver in the brand's record 2013 campaign, with October sales of the compact SUV rising by 137 percent compared to the same month last year. Year-to-date, Forester sales have totaled 96,953 units, resulting in a 57 percent jump over the same period in 2012. In addition to winning over buyers, the 2014 Forester continues to impress industry experts, as it was named the Motor Trend 2014 Sport/Utility Vehicle of the Year in October.

"Subaru managed to simultaneously make the new Forester more stylish, capable, versatile and fuel efficient, so it has been a no-brainer for many SUV shoppers this year," said Chris Dunn, general sales manager of Mastria Subaru, a Massachusetts Subaru dealer near Boston. "The automaker has applied that well-rounded approach throughout its lineup so buyers can find a ride that can conquer any road conditions without costing them extra gas money or overall practicality."

Another big reason for Subaru's success this year has been the popularity of its new XV Crosstrek compact crossover. Based on the Subaru Impreza hatchback but featuring higher ground clearance and rugged cladding, the Subaru XV Crosstrek has quickly become the brand's fourth-best seller in its first full year on the market, moving nearly 43,000 units in the United States year-to-date.

Subaru hopes to further boost its XV Crosstrek sales when its first hybrid production vehicle goes on sale in December. The 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid matches a 2.0-liter Boxer engine with a 13.4-horsepower electric motor to return 31 mpg in combined city and highway driving, an increase of three miles per gallon compared to the gas-only model.

"The Subaru XV Crosstrek has become an instant hit because it provides an unmatched mix of capability and fuel efficiency in its segment, and the hybrid model will only build on each of those things," added Dunn. "Massachusetts drivers will get extra gas mileage while staying prepared for snowstorms with the XV Crosstrek Hybrid's 8.7 inches of ground clearance and the brand's revered Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive."
