Fans of the Volkswagen Golf now have a new model to be excited about, as the German automaker is taking the leap into the electrified market with the e-Golf, its first zero-emission vehicle. The e-Golf is based on the hugely popular Volkswagen Golf and it's currently debuting at the LA Auto Show ahead of its launch in 2014 as a 2015 model. Despite the brand-new powertrain and added battery pack, the design of the e-Golf retains its familiar styling and adds exclusive exterior accents and advanced technology.

Powering the e-Golf is an AC electric motor that generates 115 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque, coupled to a single-speed transmission and a lithium-ion battery. Driving range will reach up to 90 miles, and Volkswagen is including a standard heat pump that will prevent loss of range during cold temperatures by reducing the drain on the electrical system to heat up the cabin. Charging the battery to full capacity will take less than four hours using the available 220-volt wallbox.

"The e-Golf has attractive features inside and out, like the new LED headlights, the VW Car-Net system and a rearview camera," said David Wilson, general manager of Russel Volkswagen, a VW dealer in Baltimore, Md. "And with a longer driving range than the Nissan LEAF and fast charging times, the e-Golf has the potential to become a serious competitor in the EV segment."

VW will launch the car initially in select states in the fourth quarter of 2014. Once it's on the road, the e-Golf will be able to use DC Fast Charging stations, which can recharge the battery to 80 percent in as little as 30 minutes. Drivers will also have control over some of the energy flow thanks to Eco and Eco+ driving modes, combined with adjustable regenerative braking. In an effort to remove anxiety about range and autonomy, Volkswagen will also offer Roadside Assistance, which will deliver the car to the nearest charging station.
