With the debut of its new Macan at the LA Auto Show this month, Porsche is making a full-fledged entry into the fast-growing compact-SUV segment. Modeled after the current generation of the larger Porsche Cayenne, the 2015 Porsche Macan boasts a sportier profile than some of its more upright competitors, featuring an aggressively raked roofline and a steeply sloping windshield and rear window. Other distinguishing style touches include large air intakes that vary in size depending on engine choice and a prominent clamshell-shaped hood that stretches to the Macan's flanks.

Porsche has ensured that its signature performance translates over to the compact-SUV segment, outfitting the Macan S with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 that produces 340 horsepower and enables a 0 to 60 mph time of five seconds flat. The most dedicated driving enthusiasts can upgrade to the Macan Turbo's 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 to take advantage of a segment-leading 400 horsepower and a 0 to 60 mph sprint of just 4.4 seconds. Both powerplants will be matched to a standard seven-speed PDK transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters when the Porsche Macan goes on sale late next spring.

"Just like when it first entered the SUV market more than a decade ago with the Cayenne, Porsche is instantly bringing the very best in performance and handling to a new segment with the Macan," said Larry Bedell, general manager of Porsche of Nashua, a Porsche dealer in New Hampshire. "Urban drivers will benefit from plenty of passenger and cargo space while feeling like they're driving a top-of-the-line sports car instead of a bulky utility vehicle."

Porsche hopes to build on the resounding sales success of its Cayenne with the launch of the Macan. Through October of this year, the Porsche Cayenne has moved 15,582 units in the United States, a 30 percent increase compared to the same time period in 2012. It is expected that the dealership arrival of the Macan next year will help Porsche surpass 200,000 units in global annual sales for the first time ever.
