Nissan recently announced that it would boost U.S. production of its LEAF all-electric vehicle due to rising demand, and the model's sales results continue to validate that decision with a best-ever November. In fact, the Nissan LEAF has now attracted nine straight monthly sales records since an updated 2013 model went on sale in March.

With 2,003 models finding new homes in the United States last month, the Nissan LEAF outsold the Chevy Volt and saw a 30 percent sales increase compared to its tally in November 2012. Year-to-date, sales of the LEAF have risen by 141 percent over the same period last year, totaling more than 20,000 units through November. Though Nissan hasn't announced how many more LEAF models it will be producing at its Smyrna, Tenn., assembly plant, the automaker could begin increasing output there as soon as this month.

"The LEAF is having a breakthrough sales year in the United States, and the high demand is proof that the car is not only a viable ride for commuters, but also a profitable endeavor for Nissan," said Joe Lage, general sales manager of Rosen Nissan Gurnee, a Chicago Nissan dealership. "By bringing production stateside to Tennessee for the 2013 model year, Nissan has been able to cut costs for both itself and the consumer while making the LEAF even more efficient."

The American-made 2013 Nissan LEAF features a base price that has dropped by more than $6,000 compared to the previous model year. Meanwhile, improvements in aerodynamics, regenerative braking and energy management helped the 2013 LEAF boost its miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) to 129 MPGe in the city, up from 106 MPGe for the 2012 model. That added efficiency allows the latest LEAF to drive up to 75 miles between charges, a two-mile increase in range compared to its predecessor. Buyers can also opt for a newly available onboard 6.6-kilowatt charger that cuts down the 220-volt charging time nearly in half to roughly four hours.
