Shanghai Tourism Visa Changes

Holders of passports issued by 45 countries can stay in Shanghai up to 72 hours without a visa. The requirements are simple:

1. They have a visa for the country they are traveling on toward after 72 hours.
2. They have booked seats and tickets on onward flights

The 45 countries recognized are:

Argentina, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States.

4 important issues need to be known regarding the 72-hour visa free transit in Shanghai

a. The destination and place of departure can NOT be the same. (e.g Rome – Shanghai - Rome) . If an American passport holder flies from Seoul to Shanghai, then he leaves Shanghai for any destination in the US. This applies to 72-hour visa free transit policy in Shanghai.
b. It does not apply to passengers who travel by train, ship or other transportation.
c. Visitors are NOT allowed to leave Shanghai, to other cities during the 72-hour visa-free period. You must depart from Shanghai where you arrive in. For example, you arrived at the Shanghai Pudong Airport, you must depart from Shanghai, NOT from the Beijing Capital International Airport or other airports.
d. The 72 hours will be counted from the time when the transit permit is granted, not from the time when the flight land at the airport.

2. A new convention and exhibition is open to the public:

3.Three key projects will be completed by 2015

--China’s National Convention & Exhibition Center
--A new convention and exhibition centre, located close to Hongqiao International Airport in western Shanghai, is scheduled to be completed by 2015. The development, costing US$3.5 billion, will be the largest of its kind in the world, offering 500,000 sqm of exhibition space (400,000 sqm indoor plus 100,000 sqm outdoor) as well as convention facilities. The Complex will be tantamount in size to three Shanghai New International Expo Center. After its completion, Shanghai will offer the most exhibition venues in the world.
