According to a recent statement from the prime minister of the Republic of Mauritius , the government of this African country decided to withdraw its recognition of the self-proclaimed Polisario Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).
The statement also stressed the determination of the Mauritian Government to continue to support UN efforts to find a solution that is just, fair, and acceptable to all parties to the conflict over the Sahara.
This decision was among many others that have swelled the ranks of countries opposed to the legitimacy of Polisario, and its phantom republic as representatives of the people of the Sahara. The Republic of Mauritius was among the supporters of the Polisario Front with its recognition of the so -called RASD in 1982.
Other countries such as Haiti, Paraguay, and Panama, have revised revised their positions in recent months in accordance with international legality and to contribute constructively to the process of negotiation being conducted under the auspices of the United Nations to reach a negotiated political solution to the problem of the Sahara.
It is also a decision that prioritizes the Moroccan autonomy proposal, deemed credible, serious, and likely to advance the process of settlement of the Sahara issue.
The withdrawal of recognition is yet another show of support for Morocco in and the legitimacy of its national cause and a blow to the Polisario separatists and their mentors.
