One of the most iconic lines in the performance-car segment, the BMW M Series, recently welcomed an all-new nameplate to its ranks, as the BMW M4 Coupe became the latest vehicle to sport the legendary tricolor emblem. The 2015 BMW M4 Coupe debuted this month at the Detroit Auto Show alongside its redesigned sibling, the 2015 BMW M3 Sedan, aligning with BMW's new strategy of designating its coupes with dedicated even-numbered series.
When they arrive at dealerships this summer, the new M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe will be sold with the same powerplant: an all-new M TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder engine producing 425 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. Those impressive figures are improvements of 11 horsepower and 111 pound-feet of torque over the M3's outgoing V8, despite the fact that they come from two fewer cylinders and smaller displacement. With a standard six-speed manual transmission, drivers will be able to go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, while opting for the dual-clutch seven-speed automatic gearbox will get them there in just 3.9 seconds.
"The new engine for the M3 and M4 is smaller and lighter, but also more powerful, so drivers will notice an improvement in both dynamics and efficiency over the previous generation of the M3," said Melanie Sterry, general manager of Russel BMW, a Baltimore BMW dealer. "BMW has worked hard to reduce weight and make the new models more aerodynamic, and at the same time, it's given the interiors of the cars the same level of attention."
Continuing BMW's development of in-car technology, the new M3 and M4 feature the latest version of the BMW iDrive infotainment system, with an added touch-pad controller and integration with the BMW ConnectedDrive app. The use of advanced technology isn't limited to the cabin, though, as electronics also control the Active M Differential, which works in conjunction with the Dynamic Stability Control to improve traction and handling. Also new is an electromechanical steering system with COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+ driving modes that tailor the car's response for different driving conditions or driver preferences.
