Though Acura has an indelible reputation for its refined and high-tech rides, the luxury auto brand is on a quest to shore up its cachet among driving enthusiasts. A bold replacement for the Acura TL midsize sedan and Acura TSX compact, the all-new Acura TLX debuted at the Detroit Auto Show this month.

Assuming a low and wide stance, the 2015 Acura TLX Prototype is more sports sedan than luxury cruiser, with shortened front and rear overhangs, flared fenders and crisp design lines. Like the popular Acura MDX SUV and new Acura RLX flagship sedan, the TLX Prototype features Jewel Eye LED headlamps, which are complemented by LED turn indicators integrated into the side mirrors. While the TLX at the Detroit Auto Show was technically a prototype, the performance-luxury sedan is not expected to undergo significant changes before production models go on sale in the middle of this year.

"Buyers of the new TLX will still get all the sophistication and intuitive technology that they expect in an Acura, but while the car will have a tranquil interior, its more daring exterior is designed to make some ripples in the luxury market," said Joel Avery, general manager of Acura of Peabody, a Massachusetts Acura dealer. "That more aggressive approach carries over into the new powertrains, which are geared to make the TLX more engaging and efficient than its competitors."

The standard Acura TLX will house a new 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that is expected to be highly responsive despite being lighter than the brand's similarly configured powerplants of the past. A new eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with a torque converter will be mated to the four-cylinder for fast and fuel-efficient gear changes. For buyers seeking the utmost in performance, the TLX will also be available with a 3.5-liter V6 paired to a new nine-speed automatic transmission. Acura's engineers have made handling and steering top priorities regardless of the trim, with two-wheel-drive models benefiting from the next-generation Precision All-Wheel Steer technology and all-wheel-drive models receiving the latest Super-Handling All Wheel Drive system.
