Global Sales of Nissan LEAF Surpass 100,000 Units

All-Electric Vehicle Gains Popularity Following Model Revamp

TEWKSBURY, 02/05/2014 / SubmitMyPR /

Last February, global sales of the all-electric Nissan LEAF surpassed 50,000 units just as a revamped 2013 model was headed to dealerships with a lower base price, a longer driving range and a shorter charging time. Fast-forward one year, and the LEAF has already doubled its all-time sales total, eclipsing 100,000 units since its market debut in December 2010.

The 100,000th Nissan LEAF was purchased by the owner of a dental practice in Fareham, England, but a record year of sales in the United States in 2013 played a large role in reaching the milestone. With 22,610 models finding new homes last year, U.S. sales of the Nissan LEAF rose by an impressive 130 percent compared to 2012. Nissan also moved LEAF production from Japan to Smyrna, Tenn., in January 2013, helping the automaker cut the base price of the 2013 LEAF by more than $6,000 compared to the 2012 model.

"The Nissan LEAF truly had a breakout year in 2013, and its momentum has carried over into 2014," said Gabe Despres, general manager of AutoFair Nissan Tewksbury, a Massachusetts Nissan dealership. "The revamped 2013 model has had a lot to do with that success, and the switch of production to the United States puts Nissan in a better position to keep up with the increased demand."

With improved aerodynamics, a broader range of regenerative braking and enhanced energy management, the 2013 Nissan LEAF boasts a driving range of 75 miles, a two-mile increase over the 2012 model. Overall efficiency has been boosted significantly as well, rising from 99 MPGe combined in the 2012 model to 115 MPGe combined. Meanwhile, a newly available 6.6-kilowatt onboard charger can reduce charging time by nearly half, requiring only four hours for a full charge. Buyers can also opt for new amenities on the 2013 LEAF, including 17-inch alloy wheels and leather upholstery on SL models and an optional Around View Monitor and seven-speaker Bose energy-efficient audio system.
