BMW Brings Diesel-Powered 7 Series to US with 2014 740Ld xDrive

Various auto-industry insiders have predicted that 2014 will be the "Year of the Diesel" in the United States, with the number of diesel-fueled cars sold in the country potentially doubling by the end of the 2014 model year. Thanks to their significant fuel-economy advantage over gasoline engines and their ability to eliminate the noise and smell that plagued older oil-burning powerplants, diesel engines are enjoying a renaissance among American drivers. It should come as no surprise, then, that BMW is bringing the advanced technology to its flagship sedan, with a diesel-powered 2014 BMW 7 Series expected to arrive in U.S. showrooms this spring.

Set to debut at the Chicago Auto Show this month, the 2014 BMW 740Ld xDrive will feature a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo diesel engine producing 255 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. That impressive output allows the 740Ld xDrive to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, giving the new diesel-powered 7 Series the responsiveness that drivers expect from a BMW. While EPA fuel-economy estimates for the first diesel-powered 7 Series in the U.S. are not yet available, buyers should also reap significant savings in fuel costs, as other models equipped with the BMW Advanced Diesel engine have seen a 25 to 30 percent boost in efficiency over their gasoline-powered competitors.

The fifth BMW Advanced Diesel model offered stateside, the 740Ld xDrive comes with standard features like Driving Dynamics Control with Eco Pro mode and Auto Start/Stop, which help improve fuel efficiency in everyday driving scenarios. Meanwhile, the xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system in the diesel-powered 7 Series improves handling and traction in all conditions, and an eight-speed automatic transmission further enhances driving dynamics.
