As the first vehicle to fully incorporate Mazda's SKYACTIV technology, the Mazda CX-5 hit the market in 2012 with lightweight materials in its body and chassis for better fuel efficiency and responsiveness. Now in its third model year, the compact crossover SUV continues to prove that it is heavy on safety despite its nimble ride, with the 2015 Mazda CX-5 recently earning a 5-Star Safety Rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the government agency's New Car Assessment Program.

To land its overall 5-Star Safety Rating, the 2015 CX-5 received five stars in both frontal and side crash tests while netting four stars in the rollover test. Though the NHTSA is still in the early rounds of testing for 2015 models, the CX-5 outperformed the 2015 Subaru Forester in the frontal crash test, and it topped the overall four-star ratings of the Ford Escape and Toyota RAV4 from 2014-model-year testing. Mazda's compact crossover SUV boasts a strong-yet-lightweight SKYACTIV-Body made of 61 percent high-tensile steel, while coming standard with six air bags that feature advanced dual-front, front-seat-mounted and full-length side-curtain technology.

"The beauty of the SKYACTIV suite is that it makes a vehicle's responsiveness, fuel efficiency and safety all complementary to each other instead of having them act as opposing forces, and the Mazda CX-5 continues to be a great showcase of that synergy," said Tom McGovern, general manager of Rosen Mazda Waukegan, a Chicagoland Mazda dealer. "Buyers of the CX-5 know they are getting an engaging ride without paying extra for it at the gas pump, and the whole time they also have the peace of mind that their passengers are being protected."

In addition to its standard crash-protection features, the 2015 Mazda CX-5 is available with a number of active-safety technologies that can prevent accidents from occurring in the first place, including Blind Spot Monitoring, an Adaptive Front-lighting System, Smart City Brake Support and a rearview camera. When it comes to gas mileage, the base CX-5 is the most fuel-efficient SUV on the interstate, returning up to 35 mpg on the highway with its SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmission.
