Are Smart Cities More than Just Ultra-Efficient Systems?

Smart cities will be more than just paragons of efficiency. They will generally improve the lives of their citizens.

You will hear a lot about how smart cities make life easier for citizens by making things more efficient. For instance, smart cities will allow for the true integration of transport systems in all their forms. Subways and bus depots as well as ferry services and trains will be linked to each other. Routes will be planned out for passengers depending on their destination and the most efficient travel options.

Other examples include retinal scans, facial recognition, and fingerprint scanners being installed in every building. That way, hotels, clubs, offices, etc. will be able to do better security checks. You will also be able to access your bank accounts, lockers, etc. without the need for lengthy procedures.

However, is that all that efficient smart cities promise? Do they not hold promise for a better future for all? What more can they give us other than a higher standard of living, and more fuel-efficient transportation?

Smart Cities can Solve Homelessness

Smart cities hold the key to solving homelessness or at least reforming policies on it. Researchers from IEEE have proposed that using apps and sensors can help establish a huge centralized database. This can help match available affordable housing to homeless persons. This will help match people that need homes with homes that meet their specific needs.

Smart Cities can Reduce the Carbon Footprint

With a better-integrated transportation system, more efficient industries, etc. smart cities can reduce their own carbon footprints. This will obviously reduce pollution, and carbon emissions, but also save energy. By giving the public a better-integrated transportation system, smart cities can reduce the need for individual cars. Thereby reducing the total number of cars on the road and the fuel used, electric or fossil. This is what will make smart cities efficient and great for the environment.

Smart Cities can Improve General Health

With less pollution and better services for people, smart cities can improve general health. Smart cities may also have healthier citizens as a result of better healthcare and personalized medicine. With sensors monitoring vitals and logging in crucial information on each person’s health, it will generally start to improve. Doctors will catch diseases before they’re beyond treatment, and recommend general health advice to people depending on their conditions.
