Milton residents 'cautiously optimistic' about new water grant - WCHS-TV8

MILTON, W.Va. (WCHS) — People in Milton may soon start to see some water improvements after years of dealing with discolored water. The city has just been awarded a grant from the Infrastructure Jobs and Development Council worth $970,000 to help fund a water line replacement project.

The entire project to put in a new line at Newman's Branch is expected to cost $1.1 million, but the city has agreed to fund the remainder of it. This is an antiquated pipe that dates back to the 1960s that breaks often.

According to the city, these breaks are what sometimes cause the discoloration as the city's water mixes with the West Virginia American Water they have to use to compensate. The chemicals react causing discoloration. Other times, it is a buildup of manganese that gives it the orange-red color.

Christy Black technically lives in Culloden but is still a Milton water customer who says there is no telling what will come out of her faucets from day to day.

“It’s dirty. It can be anywhere from cloudy to just a tint of yellow or just a tint to black, brown just really dirty," she said.

Discolored water has been a problem in Milton for about three years. The city has struggled to come up with the funding for the old system that would cost in total about $13 million to fully fix. This is why residents are still waiting before they jump for joy.
