Supply chain issues delay Kingston water treatment project, but spring 2022 still the goal - Wicked Local

KINGSTON – On-site construction of the new water treatment facility designed to rid town water of manganese in the southeast part of Kingston has been thrown off schedule due to delays in the delivery of other materials.

The 90-day delay is beyond the town’s control and the builder’s control, according to Sewer Commission Chairman Bob Kostka.

“The town is not holding this up,” he said. “It’s just a supply chain issue.”

The new $7 million water treatment facility for the Grassy Hole and I-86 water supply wells near Kingston Collection is expected to resolve manganese issues just as the Trackle Pond treatment facility on Route 80 did several years ago.

The total construction cost including the general contractor, professional services and contingency is $8,272,600.

The contract with the general contractor, Winston Builders Corp., of Westborough, was signed in time for the town to obtain more than $500,000 in loan forgiveness from the Massachusetts Clean Water Trust.

Construction started in March, and since then the foundation and below grade piping have been completed, the buried tank for water to be used for filter backwash supply has been installed, and filter tanks have been delivered and placed so that the building can be erected around the tanks.

Construction of the building framing and masonry work has begun, and site work is occurring concurrently, including the construction of lagoons that will handle filter backwash materials.
