If EV automaker Fisker eventually succeeds in eventually luring buyers away from the big guns, it needs a lot to go right with its upcoming Ocean SUV. Production of the Ocean is set to begin next year and the SUV not only boasts attractive looks and a powerful electric motor, but also an appealing price tag of below $40,000. That means it'll easily undercut the Tesla Model Y.
Although Fisker once had ambitions to utilize solid-state batteries, that plan ended up backfiring. Nevertheless, the company has announced some promising news on the battery front with a leading battery manufacturer and supplier, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL). CATL already supplies batteries for major brands like Tesla, BMW, Daimler, and Volkswagen.
Fisker has officially secured long-term battery capacity with CATL for the Ocean SUV. Specifically, the agreement amounts to five gigawatt-hours (GWh) annual battery capacity annually. Intriguingly, CATL will supply two unique battery solutions for the Fisker Ocean.
The main high-capacity battery pack utilizes lithium nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) cell chemistry, while the second high-value pack makes use of lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) chemistry. The two companies are currently testing the batteries at pack and vehicle level to ensure high energy density and that the batteries are optimized for crashworthiness.
