Inspire TMS Denver is pleased to share that they have opened a new clinic in Denver offering TMS Therapy. The clinic specializes in rTMS, or repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation. Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (commonly shortened to just TMS) is a treatment that requires no medication use and is free of systemic side effects. It is provided in an outpatient setting and a non-invasive treatment that uses electromagnetic fields, similar to those produced in an MRI, to stimulate brain activity at specific locations on the outer cortex of the brain. The primary indication for TMS is treatment-resistant clinical depression - unresponsiveness and/or intolerance to antidepressants. TMS was cleared by the FDA in 2008 to treat major depression and additional indications are being identified on an ongoing basis. For example, it was also approved for augmenting treatment of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) in 2018. TMS targets dysfunctional brain circuits that are connected to mood, anxiety, and other mental health symptoms. TMS increases neuroplasticity and restores proper brain functioning for these dysfunctional brain circuits. It is a proven method for reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety with long-lasting results.
The effectiveness of TMS is backed by a solid evidence base with higher response and remission rates compared to standard treatments, such as repeated medication trials and/or therapy. Dr. Samuel Clinch, the founder, and medical director at Inspire TMS Denver, believes that TMS is an underutilized treatment and hopes to improve education about TMS for patients and the community at large. TMS is generally recognized as safe with few contraindications to treatment. It can be combined with current medication treatments or utilized on its own for individuals that have not tolerated or responded to medications. The procedure is very well tolerated with only occasional mild headache or scalp tenderness the first few sessions. Each treatment session can be performed in approximately 20 minutes and with certain newer and advanced protocols, treatments can take as little as 3 minutes. Depending on the condition treated, a typical course of TMS involves 30-36 sessions, 5 days each week on weekdays, spread out over 6-9 weeks.
Inspire TMS Denver is currently serving the greater Denver Metropolitan area. Patients can utilize initial phone consultations free of charge to decide if TMS is a good solution for their condition(s). Staff coordinate and complete all benefit and eligibility checks and prior authorizations to ensure patients maximize insurance benefits and are fully aware of all treatment costs. All major insurances, including Medicare and Tricare, are accepted, and sliding scale self-pay rates are available when needed. The center collaborates with patients’ doctors and treatment providers to ensure TMS therapy is conducted in accordance with other care professionals and their prescribed treatments. Patients have access to their own unique health record portal and can access health records, complete forms and questionnaires, and communicate directly with the team at Inspire TMS Denver through the portal.
