CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government has passed an order making it mandatory to qualify in a Tamil exam for all government jobs conducted by different recruitment agencies.
"As far as Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission is concerned, Tamil qualifying exam is mandatory for all recruitment exams. The candidates need to get a minimum 40 marks to qualify in the Class X level exam. TNPSC will not evaluate the answer sheets of other subjects if they don't qualify in the Tamil exam," said human resource management secretary Mythili K Rajendran said in an order issued on Wednesday.
For group I and II, IIA posts, the Tamil qualifying exam will be conducted along with the main written examination. The paper will test the ability of candidates in translation, understand the meaning and letter writing and essay writing. Candidates need to get 40 marks out of 100 to qualify in this exam.
"TNPSC will evaluate the answer sheets of other exams only if they qualify in the Tamil exam," she further said.
For group III and IV posts which have single stage examination, general Tamil will be made mandatory and general English option will be removed.
Candidates need to appear for the Tamil Eligibility cum Scoring Test for 150 marks along with general studies, aptitude and mental ability papers which will be conducted for 150 marks. Only if candidates score 40% marks in Tamil Eligibility cum Scoring Test, the other paper will be evaluated.
