To head off another potential supply chain disruption, the South Korean government has started monitoring supplies of electrolytic manganese, an alloy used in the production of steel amid concerns that China, the main supplier, could cut production.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy said Tuesday that the government will work with the Korean steel industry on countermeasures in case a disruption does occur.
The ministry said it will strengthen its monitoring system, consider stockpiling the material, and look into other ways of supporting the industry if necessary.
Electrolytic manganese, a highly purified version of the element is also used in the production of batteries for electric vehicles.
