A 22-year-old tech-savvy youth was arrested for allegedly stealing broadcast signals of television channels to broadcast them on multiple apps he had made. According to the cyber crime cell, the accused broadcast sports events before the actual broadcast on TV channels. Such apps are mainly used by those involved in betting, investigators said.
A complaint was lodged at the city’s cybercrime cell by a representative of Star India that their broadcast signals were being stolen or diverted and transmitted on several applications. The complainant stated that the company has not given any authority to anyone to broadcast shows of Star India.
Based on the complaint, cybercrime sleuths traced the accused all the way to South Dinajpur district in West Bengal, from where police arrested the youth identified as Nitai Sarkar. According to police, Sarkar had made several apps and created a website where he used to charge Rs 5,000 for each download of the app.
ACP cybercrime J M Yadav said, “Programmes were shown on the apps before the actual channels aired them. Such applications are mainly used for betting activities. We have apprehended only one accused as of now but investigation on all aspects of the case is going on.” Probe is also on to know who all downloaded the applications and used them. Appropriate action will also be taken against those who downloaded the illegal apps and used them for gambling, police said.
