The updated Grantsburg municipal water system is one critical step closer to being back in full service after the village received a ‘green light’ from the state to move forward with returning their Well #3 to service, using a new high-tech filtration system meant to address very high manganese levels.

After months of construction of a new building, additional utility services, high tech filtration system and other measures meant to remove the manganese from the fresh water supply, the system is nearly ready to go live, even after several additional delays, where several extra months of waiting on final construction, engineering and a few specific fittings. Those fittings were delayed to the national supply chain slowdown, but the new system passed inspection this week from the state Department of Natural Resources.

“There are still a few things, and we’re waiting on the final report from the DNR,” stated public works director Jerry Konobeck.

The new filtration system overcomes the high manganese levels, which forced the village to reconstruct Well #3 with the new filtration system meant to overcome the health concerns. While the final costs are still to be determined, the village has completely reconstructed the well Park Street and Harrison Ave, on the village’s northwest end. The new building has been rebuilt with the new system in mind, and was first ‘fired up’ in recent weeks, with adjustments, flushing and training for staff in maintenance occurring in recent weeks,...
