Maybe you stood in line at Barnes & Noble for midnight book releases, joined a local Quidditch team, or marathoned all eight films with friends as a holiday tradition. Every bit of merchandise, media, and press coverage after Deathly Hallows: Part 2 hinges on triggering feelings of nostalgia, reminding fans that they were once part of a like-minded community that encompassed millions of people around the world.
And millions of people probably watched the new HBO Max special Return to Hogwarts, which celebrates the 20th anniversary of the first Harry Potter movie. The two-hour special highlights the impact the films have had on generations of fans who have watched them religiously — and the impact the films had on the actors who brought the characters to life. But the special does little to address the hippogriff in the room: author J.K. Rowling’s increasing transmisogyny, the role Harry Potter content plays in funding her hate, and the ongoing criticisms of bigotry embedded in the books and films...
