Google will soon take a swipe at web pages it deems “unusable” in a search algorithm that will serve as a yardstick for the digital content industry.

Soon the company will release an update to its search engine that will downgrade pages that its systems deem are not providing users with high-quality information. Google is trying to prioritize authoritative, human-written pages that aren’t explicitly messing with their search results.

“In particular, it will focus on content that appears to have been created primarily to appear on search engines, i.e. content that is based on SEO, rather than content that takes humans into account.” , explains the company on its blog.

This update, called “useful content,” is the latest round in a long battle between Google and the ocean of web pages, content creators, and SEO experts vying to appear at the top of search results.
