Recently, OpenAI invited the public to demo its chatbot. After a few media outlets sampled the new conversational droid, headlines started popping up, like The Atlantic’s “The End of High-School English.” And the New York Post went so far as to say, “It’s the little engine that could ... bring down Google and perhaps the human race.”
Could an AI chatbot actually end humanity as we know it? Maybe. At least the late Professor Stephen Hawking thought so. Four years before his death, he told the BBC that “the development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.”
In the search engine optimization (SEO) community, the chatter and doomsday scenarios have turned more toward the thought that an AI chatbot would directly answer consumers’ questions rather than content published by a company trying to sell products or services. In the law firm SEO world, that means someone might ask ChatGPT what to do after being injured in a car accident instead of their local personal injury lawyer. I, however, am not so convinced that a chatbot is going to render “Google obsolete in two years,” as predicted by Gmail developer, Paul Buchheit.
