ETG is improving the quality of life in communities throughout San Jose, California with first of its kind security services that work directly with community members.
The company’s workforce is breaking the mold of stereotypical services that often see security guards taking a laid back and non-interactive approach to crime or disruptions in an area. Instead of working to solve a problem, typically many security guards will just sit around and wait for police to arrive on scene to handle a problematic situation.
With high moral values and a sense of duty to get to know people in the community on a personal level, ETG’s security guards have already proven they can turn an unstable area into a vibrant part of the city that attracts businesses and happy residents.
Currently the organization is working with city officials as well as Silicon Valley’s premier non-profit for vibrancy, Urban Vibrancy Institute, to develop an incident response team that utilizes a citywide network of security cameras to monitor and track situations that require the presence of a guard. With ETG monitoring the areas they serve they would be able to respond to an incident in a quick manner to de-escalate the situation, which their workforce has become highly efficient at.
The response team allows ETG to watch over individual areas and keep track of the progress their workforce has made to the community. They have also created an objective five-sense approach to understand what they can do to improve quality of life and assess vibrancy on a scale of one to ten. For example, if an area has a polluted smell then that area of town is obviously not as vibrant as it could be.
Their methods have been proven in a part of the city that used to be one of the worst drug spots in San Jose. Through a tireless work effort of engaging the community and protecting it, the streets of this area have become one of the best neighborhoods for retailers and patrons alike. If a certain area of the city needs to be improved, ETG makes sure to work with city officials to have the proper services brought out to clean the area and improve its vibrancy.
Business owners and residents feel safe with ETG’s security guards patrolling the area because of the direct communication lines they have with the company. The organization has created a QR code on their business cards that has been given to businesses that enable them to scan the code and enter their location and assistance requirements if they need the incident response team sent. There is also a text line that is available for use if businesses or citizens need immediate assistance.
“What we're doing is different, really, on so many levels. We engage with the community, retailers, patrons, and the homeless alike. We get to know our clients while improving vibrancy and safety. We know their names, have conversations with them, and ask them about their family, so we're a part of that community and we live where we work,” says Dyer, who is an advisory board member of an organization working to provide housing for the unhoused community.
