Everyone is constantly being connected to typography from the moment they wake up until the time they go to sleep. Anything that is written or drawn out is a form of typography. This leads to typography often being overlooked as an integral facet of everyday life, but it is fundamentally essential throughout the history of civilization and still continues to be just as important today.

More than ever before businesses are acting to have custom fonts created for their brands, marketing and communications. Many of them do this to connect with the local markets they serve. This enables them to connect with clients and customers who interact with native scripts on a regular basis.

Languages and writing systems are a vital component of cultural identity, but over the years large font foundries have not taken the proper care and ethics in dealing with certain foreign scripts, accents or alphabets. They haven’t taken into account the sensibility of these cultures and what is important to them in regard to their written languages. This has led to a need for better adoption of these cultures into existing fonts so they can be properly utilized by the cultures who have been historically left out of any diligent adaptation.

That need is now being met with an emerging design industry that takes seriously the cultural respect that needs to be given to typographies as well as brands that are realizing how important they are. Creating typography can be a complex and difficult process to perfect. If done properly it can be one of a graphic designer’s most valuable assets. This holds true to fonts that require many different elements that work in sync to create a typeface.

TypeTogether, an award winning independent type foundry, is one of the leading companies in developing fonts tailored to specific demographics. To create these typefaces, the foundry works directly with their clients as well as typographers and linguists who are intimate with their own native scripts through every step of the process.

Collaboration is an integral part of TypeTogether’s process and vision. All the members of the company work through educational methods such as teaching, workshopping, publishing textbooks and articles that expand accessibility to the craft of typography. They also have created a crediting structure for the market which previously hadn’t existed.

TypeTogether stands out as an industry leader in the development of culturally appropriate fonts through many aspects of their work. All of their custom projects are headed by senior type designers that work in tight knit teams who in turn, work with a broader network of collaborators. This allows them to develop quickly while maintaining the production of high quality fonts. The company is adamant about avoiding any recycling of font types, ensuring any custom made fonts are truly unique.

Once a digital font is developed, TypeTogether continues to support the relationship with the client by making sure the implementation of the fonts properly operate to whatever typographic purpose they are made for. TypeTogether remains on hand for any typographic consulting that clients may require upon receiving an adapted or commissioned font. The company makes it easy for clients around the world to work with them as remote collaboration has been core to their work style, well before it became a pandemic norm.

TypeTogether was founded by Veronika Burian and José Scaglione while they were in University in the U.K. working on their master’s in typeface design. They began designing fonts for the editorial sector, specifically focusing on underserved regions such as Eastern Europe. They have taken a holistic approach to bring culturally sensitive font adaptation to writing systems throughout the world.

“Type is an important means to communicate, and that's why it’s so important when you

deal with other scripts or with other country’s languages and populations with different cultural backgrounds that you communicate in the right way, so that it actually is received correctly,” says José Scaglione Co Founder and Type Director of TypeTogether.
