In a society where many try to give access to basic necessities, menstruation products often remain out of reach for those who are homeless or living below the poverty line. Helping Women Period (HWP), a non-profit organization based in Lansing, Michigan, founded with the hope to aid a few, has recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully delivering over 6 million period products to those in need.

Started as what the founder terms an “accidental nonprofit,” HWP began with a simple mission; to provide menstrual products to those who couldn’t afford them in their community. What started on a small scale has blossomed into a community-driven initiative that is changing lives throughout Michigan.

The numbers speak volumes about the impact of nonprofit work. In 2021, Helping Women Period distributed 750,000 products. The following year, this number surged to 1.1 million. And in 2023, HWP surpassed the 2 million mark. Through wholesale purchasing and strategic partnerships with over 287 charity organizations, HWP has managed to provide essential menstrual products at an astonishingly low cost of $40 per person per year.

The issue of period poverty is not limited to a specific region; it is a nationwide problem. In the United States, one in five girls has missed school due to the lack of access to period products. Furthermore, two in five women struggle to purchase period products due to a lack of income. Despite efforts by various organizations, including Always’ #EndPeriodPoverty program, which has donated millions of products, the systemic issue persists. Only 22 states have passed laws to provide free period products in some capacity, leaving many individuals still struggling to access basic hygiene necessities.

The shame around the word menstruation and its hygiene is more than just about the products; individuals also need to be educated, breaking the stigma surrounding menstruation. HWP founder Lysne Tait recognizes this and goes beyond simply distributing pads and tampons. They offer bilingual educational materials and workshops to ensure that menstruators understand how to use the products. Furthermore, by encouraging open dialogue and inclusivity, HWP is addressing the menstruation taboo.

The impact of HWP’s efforts extends beyond the numbers. Menstruation remains a barrier to self-sufficiency, with many unable to go to school or work. In the words of Lysne Tait, “We believe that no one should have to worry about the economic and social impact of menstruating. Our work is driven by a commitment to equity and justice, ensuring that everyone has access to the products and resources they need to manage their periods with dignity.”

As Helping Women Period continues to expand its reach and impact, it serves as a reminder that small grassroots initiatives can make a significant difference in addressing systemic issues. With perseverance, compassion, and community support, organizations like HWP are paving the way towards a future where period poverty is a thing of the past.
