Cape Smokey, a year-round mountain resort in Atlantic Canada, has officially announced its first 27 high-end villas, marking the completion of the resort’s much-anticipated winter phase. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of snow-capped peaks and the Atlantic Ocean, the opening on December 26 represents a major milestone in Cape Smokey’s transformation into a world-class, all-season destination.

“This moment has been years in the making,” said Martin Kejval, CEO of Cape Smokey. “What we have built here is something truly astonishing, a place where the ocean, mountain, and snow coexist in harmony. Guests can ski toward the ocean and then retreat to a luxury villa just steps away.”

The newly opened villas will sit at the foot of Cape Smokey’s ski slopes, designed to offer both privacy and panoramic views of the water. Each villa features three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and modern interiors that reflect the natural beauty of Nova Scotia’s coastline. This launch marks the first phase in a series of planned expansions that will eventually include a total of 78 villas and a full boutique-style village with shops, dining, and year-round entertainment.

Cape Smokey purchased the property in 2019, just before the global pandemic, and has since rebuilt the ski resort from the ground up. Once an abandoned ski hill dating back to 1971, the area had been dormant for more than 30 years before Kejval and his team began their redevelopment efforts. In 2021, the resort introduced Atlantic Canada’s gondola, setting the stage for a new era of tourism in the region.

“What makes Cape Smokey so special is skiing, along with the diversity of experiences we can offer,” Kejval said. “From fishing and hiking to fine dining and romantic walks along the beach, our goal is to create what I call a ‘green paradise,’ a place where everyone can find something to enjoy, no matter the season.” For example, in addition to skiing the slopes during the winter season, watersports such as surfing and paddleboarding are an enticing experience.

Currently offering over 150 acres of skiable terrain, the resort plans to expand to 642 acres as future phases are completed. With an estimated 5,000-bed capacity envisioned for the full development, Cape Smokey aims to become one of the most dynamic outdoor destinations in eastern Canada.

Beyond tourism, the project has already brought significant economic benefits to the Cape Breton region. Construction alone has generated various jobs, and by the time the full resort is completed, Cape Smokey expects to directly employ more people.

“This is a revitalization effort for the community,” Kejval added. “Cape Breton has always been known for its beauty, but for too long it’s been seen as a place to drive through, not stay. We want to change that perception and give visitors a reason to make it their destination.”

With the first villas now open and the winter season underway, Cape Smokey is poised to redefine coastal alpine living in Canada, where guests can experience the thrill of skiing toward the sea and the comfort of returning to ocean-view luxury.
