Following a round of severe thunderstorms across the western North Carolina Piedmont, Great State Roofing is encouraging homeowners in ZIP codes 28117 and 28601 to check their properties for signs of wind, hail, tree, and water damage.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for western North Carolina on July 28, including Iredell County. Preliminary reports from the National Weather Service documented a power outage attributed to fallen trees or limbs near Longview in Catawba County. Reports from nearby Alexander County included hail estimated at one inch and 1.25 inches in diameter
Although not every property within the storm area experienced damage, roofing problems can be difficult to identify from the ground. Wind may lift shingles and break their seals without removing them completely. Hail may loosen protective granules, bruise asphalt shingles, dent metal roofing components, or damage gutters, vents, flashing, and downspouts.
“Homeowners should not assume that a roof is undamaged simply because there is no immediate leak,” said a Great State Roofing owner Sina Safaie. “A lifted shingle, loose flashing, or hail impact may not allow water inside until the next heavy rainfall. A timely inspection gives the homeowner an opportunity to identify the problem before it affects the attic or interior of the home.”
The National Weather Service forecast calls for generally dry conditions through Friday in Iredell and Catawba counties, followed by increasing rain and thunderstorm chances Saturday night through Monday.
Great State Roofing recommends that homeowners use the dry period to complete a safe inspection from the ground. Warning signs may include:
● Missing or lifted shingles
● Roofing materials in the yard
● Dented gutters, vents, or downspouts
● Loose flashing or ridge-cap shingles
● Fallen branches or tree impact
● Detached gutters or fascia
● New attic moisture
● Ceiling stains or bubbling paint
● Water entering around skylights, chimneys, or vents
Homeowners should not climb onto a steep, wet, or potentially damaged roof. Instead, they should photograph visible conditions, inspect the attic and interior, and arrange a professional assessment when damage is suspected.
Property owners considering an insurance claim should record the date of the storm, photograph exterior and interior damage, save relevant weather information, and contact their insurance carrier to review policy requirements. A roofing contractor can provide an inspection, photographs, measurements, and a written scope of recommended repairs, but insurance coverage is determined by the carrier under the individual policy.
