Western Australia Added 12,248 Businesses in 2025-26, and Each One Must Keep Records for Five Years

WA added 12,248 businesses in 2025-26, up 4.6%, the largest rise of any state, ABS data shows. Mobule Storage notes that each new business must keep its records for five years.

Forrestdale, WA , Australia, 11/02/2026 / SubmitMyPR /

Mobule Storage is a Perth mobile self-storage business operated from 21 Remisko Drive, Forrestdale. Alongside household storage, it supplies delivered storage mobules sized in archive boxes for business records, stock and equipment. This release interprets the latest ABS business counts and the Australian Government's record-keeping rules for Perth's small and new businesses.

Mobule Storage says the record number of new Western Australian businesses will need somewhere to keep five years of paperwork, and that off-site storage is now a routine part of running a small business from a home, a van or a short-lease shopfront.

The ABS release Counts of Australian Businesses, including Entries and Exits, July 2022 to June 2026, published on 18 August 2026, reports that the number of actively trading businesses in Western Australia rose by 12,248 in 2025-26, a 4.6% increase and the largest percentage rise of any state or territory. Nationally there were 2,814,778 actively trading businesses at 30 June 2026, of which 1,818,575 were non-employing and 996,203 employed staff.

Non-employing businesses grew faster than any other size class, up 4.8% nationally, compared with 0.1% growth for businesses with one to four employees. Many of those sole traders and micro-businesses operate without a dedicated warehouse or archive room.

What records must a Western Australian business keep, and for how long?

The Australian Government's business.gov.au record-keeping guidance states that most business records must be kept for five years, and that some company and employee records must be kept for seven years. Records may be kept digitally or on paper, must be in English or easily translated, and digital copies must be a true and clear reproduction of the original.

Paper records still accumulate: signed contracts, invoices, receipts, delivery dockets, employment files and compliance certificates. A business that started trading in July 2026 will still be holding its first year's paperwork in 2031.

Key facts from the public record:

  • Business growth, Western Australia: 12,248 more actively trading businesses in 2025-26, up 4.6%, the largest percentage increase of any state or territory (ABS, released 18 August 2026).
  • National count: 2,814,778 actively trading businesses at 30 June 2026; 460,461 entries (16.9% entry rate) and 375,331 exits (13.8% exit rate) during 2025-26 (ABS).
  • Non-employing businesses: Up 4.8% nationally in 2025-26, the fastest-growing size class (ABS).
  • Record retention: Most business records must be kept for five years; some company and employee records for seven years (business.gov.au, Australian Government).

How does Mobule Storage size a mobule for business records and stock?

Mobule Storage publishes its mobule capacities in archive boxes: up to 45 archive boxes in a 6 cubic metre mobule, 70 in an 8 cubic metre mobule and 90 in a 10 cubic metre mobule. Mobules are delivered to the business address, packed by the business, collected and stored at the Forrestdale facility, and redelivered on request. Stored mobules can be accessed on weekdays between 8am and 5pm with 24 hours' notice, and the company's short-term storage page notes that mobules are also used for commercial documents and office moves.

For businesses that need extra lockable space on their own premises, a weatherproof 8 cubic metre on-site mobule can be left on site for event storage, construction projects or seasonal stock. Mobules hold up to 1 tonne, and all sizes can be ordered through the online instant quote system.

Suggested quote, approval required: "Twelve thousand new businesses is twelve thousand new sets of tax records, and most of those owners are working out of a spare room or a ute rather than an office with a compactus," said Andrew Nairn, Facility Manager, Mobule Storage. "Sizing a mobule by archive box means an owner can count the boxes on the floor and know exactly what they are ordering."

What should a business check before storing records off site?

Records containing personal information remain the business's responsibility while in storage. The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner's guidance for small business explains which businesses are covered by the Privacy Act. Businesses should keep an index of what is in each mobule, label boxes by financial year and destruction date, and confirm their own insurance covers stored contents, as Mobule Storage's FAQ states that insuring stored belongings is the customer's responsibility.

Perth businesses can request an instant quote for a delivered storage mobule sized to their archive boxes.
