Phillips Charitable, a non-profit foundation, has announced additional grants in its second year of operation. PCO is focused on three specific constituencies of importance to the board members: Single parents, engineering students, and military veterans. These groups were chosen based on the life experiences of the founding board members.

In recent months, the foundation approved grants to the Fisher House, a nonprofit organization that builds homes near military medical facilities to accommodate veteran’s families for longer term hospice visits with their loves ones. In addition, the foundation made a grant to the Wounded Warrior Project to help smooth the transition for returning wounded veterans.

In the area of single parents, the PCO recently approved a grant to a single mother of toddler twins in California who had recently become unemployed and lost her home. The grant was delivered quickly enough to allow the family to stabilize its living conditions, arrange child care, and initiate a job search.

PCO also approved a grant to a promising engineering student in Atlanta so he could remain in private school and pursue his dream of becoming the first college graduate in his family. The foundation also made a grant to Harlem Village Academies, a pioneering charter school in New York with a proven track record of success.

The two major operating principles of PCO are to (1) evaluate and decide on grants quickly, normally within 48 hours, to help people with urgent challenges that can’t wait for lengthy application processes and (2) expend 100% of foundation funds on helping people in need and nothing on administrative overhead which is funded by the board itself. PCO was founded by four lifelong friends including its president, Charles Phillips, CEO of Infor.
