They say you can't please everyone all of the time, but Car and Driver magazine claims the 2013 Volkswagen Golf and its GTI performance variant have what it takes to succeed at that onerous task. Offering everything from outstanding fuel economy to pulse-raising acceleration, the Golf and GTI recently landed a shared spot on the publication's 2013 10Best Cars list.

Competition for the annual 10Best Cars list is intense, with most of the nominees being new or significantly revised. Car and Driver also brought back last year's winners, as well as models that didn't have a chance to compete for a spot on the previous list. Finally, each model was required to be available for purchase by January 2013 and to have a base price of less than $80,000. The Volkswagen Golf and GTI earned their shared spot for their well-rounded packages, receiving very good marks across the board.

"Whether you want a fuel-sipping commuter or a tire-burning hot hatch, the VW Golf and GTI fit the bill," said Jason Thompson, general manager of Quirk Volkswagen, a Braintree, MA Volkswagen dealer. "No matter which flavor you choose, the Golf has impeccable road manners, head-turning style and quality materials that the competition simply can't match."

Car and Driver editors praised the Golf and GTI for their top-quality interiors, comfortable rides and range of refined powerplants that can suit different lifestyles without busting a budget. Available with a 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel engine that returns up to 42 mpg on the highway, and a 2.0-liter turbocharged gas engine in the GTI that enables a sprint from zero to 60 mph in just 6.8 seconds, the Volkswagen Golf lineup offers a unique mix of performance and fuel economy.

Sold as a two- or four-door hatchback, the Golf provides ample room for five adults, and with its folding back seats, it has surprising cargo-carrying ability as well. Buyers can also treat themselves to upscale available features like heated front seats, an advanced touchscreen navigation system and Bluetooth audio streaming through a 300-watt Dynaudio premium sound system.

Critical acclaim doesn't always translate to success on the sales floor, but the Golf is exceling there as well. The compact hatchback posted a 15-percent year-over-year increase in sales last month, helping Volkswagen reach its best overall November sales since 1973. The automaker's year-to-date sales have grown 35 percent with one month left to tally in 2012, with more than 394,000 models sold.

"Volkswagen has really hit its stride by offering models that appeal to a wide demographic of shoppers," added Thompson. "No matter which Volkswagen drivers choose, they know they're getting a top-quality product that will exceed their expectations at every turn."
